
Once we reach our Phase 1 funding target, construction of the mobile exhibit truck will begin.
This vehicle starts with a used Freightliner MT‑55 step‑van chassis, a proven commercial platform known for durability, serviceability, and the ability to support heavy electrical and HVAC loads. From that foundation, the truck will be transformed into a purpose‑built educational exhibit engineered to safely house both live insects and artificial creatures in realistic natural settings. We will not have live venomous snakes on the truck.
Inside the truck, visitors will encounter fully enclosed displays featuring live native insects, along with open‑air exhibits showcasing lifelike robotic models of native venomous snakes. These are complemented by a wide collection of museum‑quality artificial creatures representing Texas’s hazardous wildlife. The center aisle features a raised glass walkway, allowing guests to walk above a sealed under‑floor exhibit that reveals the hidden dangers commonly found in Texas environments.
The vehicle is designed for true off‑grid operation. It carries nine hours of battery reserve to power climate control and all exhibit systems during presentations. The electrical system is augmented with 2,500 watts of rooftop solar, ensuring quiet, emission‑free operation at schools and community events. A secondary heating and cooling system, driven by the truck’s engine, provides full redundancy for safety of the creatures and reliability.
ADA‑Compliant Ramp and Accessible Entryway will ensure access to all students.
8/26 — Exhibit Work: I began work on the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake Atomtronic system. It will feature head tracking, tongue flicking, rattling, and a 100 ms, 25‑inch strike.
Below is the initial skeletal structure. I’m using an artificial tendon routed along the outside of the curvature to drive the strike motion. Each joint has mechanical limits controlled by a local tendon, and the structure returns to its neutral shape using a torsion spring (not shown).
The Idea is to allow inspection with nothing between the observer and the snake. Light curtains and camera face tracking will trigger the snake behaviors.
